The Concrete of Everything: A Speculative Approach to Sustainable Design

The Tao Te Ching states: “There is a thing formed in chaos, born before heaven and earth. Silent and void, it stands unchanging, moves endlessly in cycles, and is the origin of all existence under heaven. Having no proper name, I name it the Tao.”

This ancient wisdom reveals the eternal law of nature: all lives and substances derive from integration and symbiosis. Matter and nature interact and circulate endlessly, constituting the fundamental logic behind the survival and evolution of all things in the world.

Nowadays, human society advances at a rapid pace. Unrestrained resource exploitation and extensive production modes have broken the balance of nature. Resource depletion, climate disorder and environmental pollution have become increasingly severe, intensifying the conflicts between human habitation development and natural ecosystems. Against such a backdrop, redefining the bond between humanity, materials and nature, establishing sound creation philosophies and practicing sustainable development have become the core mission of contemporary design, as well as a practical consensus rooted in real life.

All tangible beings are constructed from matter. As the foundation of human survival and progress, matter also serves as a vital carrier that inherits regional culture, collective memories and emotional sentiments. From daily household artifacts to public architectural spaces, materials run through all aspects of life and carry forward the lineage of human civilization.

Since the Industrial Revolution, high-energy-consumption and high-emission linear development has prevailed, forming a one-way consumption chain of extraction, production, utilization and abandonment. Human beings have incessantly seized resources from nature and adopted a disposable creation mindset. Such behavior has not only led to the sharp decline of natural mineral reserves, but also generated massive industrial waste and construction debris, bringing ever-growing ecological pressure and fully exposing the inherent defects of traditional development modes.

Leonardo da Vinci’s theory that all things generate and transform into one another is in perfect accordance with the law of conservation of matter: matter never vanishes, but merely alters its existing form. Following this natural principle, building a closed-loop circulation system for waste materials through dismantling, restructuring, remodeling and reuse is the most pragmatic and effective way to achieve ecological sustainability.

Sustainable development is never an empty slogan nor an illusory industry proposition. It is rational thinking summed up amid ecological crises, as well as down-to-earth actions oriented towards long-term benefits. In essence, material innovation follows the laws of natural circulation to revitalize idle waste resources, tap their regenerative potential, and facilitate the harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature via practical creation.

For years, BENTU has dedicated itself to local material research and solid waste regeneration practices. Exploring concrete materials from a pragmatic perspective, we break the stereotyped cognition that concrete is merely a common construction material. We regard it as a medium for circular creation and a tangible manifestation of ecological concepts, embedding sustainable design concepts into the whole process of material research, craft polishing and product implementation.

Concrete is defined by two core essences: mixing and setting. As the most widely used foundational building material across the globe, it has far surpassed its practical value as simple engineering material, embodying profound wisdom of material reconstruction and rebirth.

Mixing means embracing diversified substances, accommodating diverse forms, textures and physical properties of industrial residues, rural scraps and construction waste. It breaks the boundaries between different material categories and realizes the harmonious fusion of heterogeneous materials. Setting means gathering scattered resources to restructure fragmented waste. Through scientific proportioning and mature craftsmanship, we endow discarded materials with brand-new structural forms, practical functions and applicable scenarios, completing the profound transformation from idle waste to usable creations.

Adhering to the core attributes of mixing and setting, BENTU abandons the traditional mode that relies heavily on natural sand, gravel and virgin mineral resources. We take industrial tailings, fly ash, steel slag, waste ceramic fragments, recycled construction aggregates and various solid wastes as major raw materials to replace natural aggregates for formula research and practical creation. This approach curbs natural resource exploitation at the source, consumes solid waste efficiently, and realizes resource recycling and high-value utilization of low-grade waste materials.

Taking concrete fusion as the core carrier and innovative design as the driving force, we reshape the physical forms and practical functions of various waste materials. We not only revive the inherent practical value of waste, but also dig out the historical marks and regional features carried by industrial and rural scraps, endowing material regeneration with profound humanistic connotations. Beyond superficial secondary utilization of waste, we completely abandon the unilateral resource-oriented creation mindset, build a complete material recycling system, ease the opposition between humanity and nature, and establish a balanced developmental pattern featuring resource interconnection and ecological coexistence.

BENTU firmly believes that sustainable development is never a distant grand ideal, but subtle practices integrated into people’s daily necessities and living spaces. Our ecological pursuit lies in daily utensils crafted from recycled waste ceramics, unique textures refined from industrial residues, as well as our persistent dedication to raw material debugging, craft optimization and on-site practical application.

With mature design logic and standardized production techniques, we break public prejudices that recycled building materials are crude, cheap and aesthetically inferior. We preserve the natural original texture of waste materials, respect their innate casual and unrestrained traits, and develop eco-friendly recycled materials that integrate rustic charm, aesthetic temperament and practical performance. We blend the primitive beauty of materials into modern life, and make ecological concepts fit in with mainstream public aesthetics.

Contemporary sustainable design needs to balance creative expression and practical implementation. Material circulation and regeneration are never helpless compromises that sacrifice beauty and texture, but aesthetic innovations that forge simple and natural fashion based on innate material characteristics. Remolding waste materials is never hasty creation with simplified craftsmanship, but sincere creation that conforms to natural laws and upholds original ecological aspirations.

Currently, the whole society is striving to explore a path of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature. The answer lies not in abstract theoretical speculations, but in real living scenes, numerous idle waste resources waiting to be revitalized, and every practical attempt of material fusion and remodeling.

When discarded industrial residues and construction waste regain practical value and humanistic depth empowered by design, humanity re-establishes equal communication with the material world, and rebuilds an intimate and reverent connection with nature.

The in-depth value embodied by The Concrete of Everything lies not only in realizing the morphological renewal and functional reuse of waste materials, but also in repairing the currently fragmented ecological relations. It bridges the developmental gaps between industrial production and natural ecology, urban expansion and rural construction, daily consumption and material circulation, raises ecological awareness among both designers and users, and unites public consensus for building an eco-friendly sustainable lifestyle.

Gather scattered fragments to take shape, transform idle waste into new vitality. BENTU always stays true to the original aspiration embodied by The Concrete of Everything. Rooted in daily practical practices, we connect humanity with materials, humanity with nature, and design with daily life. Through steady and earnest material practices, we explore harmonious coexisting lifestyles, and contribute to constructing a green, low-carbon and circular sustainable future.
